“There are things you can’t reach. But you can reach out to them, and all day long.”

Boyle, Gregory (2010-02-14). Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion (p. 186). Free Press. Kindle Edition.

·        How a certain way of thinking success can lead to justice…..?????

justice
if we remember we belong to each other, we wouldn’t have to talk about justice… it would already be here
kinship
“Without kinship there is no justice…. Without justice there is no peace.” [Pastor G]

Deficiency of compassion of a once thriving warmth; overtaken from an aloofness inside, calcified of life’s occurrences.
The calcification of hatred and greed melted away from acts of compassionate persistency of one man [ Pastor G.].

There are things you can’t reach, but you reach out all day long p186

“standing in solidarity”
“stand w/ the badly behaved…. Until you understand it from what it is”

You stand with the least likely to succeed until success is succeeded by something more valuable: kinship. You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear.
Boyle, Gregory (2010-02-14). Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion (p. 179). Free Press. Kindle Edition.

·        Love is success
·        Purpose not to save but to help them find themselves
·        Rif off “reach’ à can’t reach, but still reach out [186]
·        Compassion is always at its most authentic about a shift from the cramped world of self- preoccupationI into a move expansive place of fellowship, of true kinship
·        Part of why we are comfortable is we are talking about love
·        Justice is a process, an act of free will, he;ping them find themselves in a positive way
·        Justice is peace
Desire for purity à enemy of justice, why? b/c they want to be saved

Self-preoccupation à meaning and it’s relation to justice
Self-preoccupation à kinshipà justice à peace
Self – preoccupation à hold on, I am working on myself, I got issues, I believe my own hype

Can the ratification of your internal justice, burnish internal demons set by life’s occurrences?

Success is a purity code

A world full of sin
Born into sin/ saved is a process

“If you surrender your need for results and outcomes, success becomes God’s business. I find it hard enough to just be faithful.”
Boyle, Gregory (2010-02-14). Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion (p. 168). Free Press. Kindle Edition.
To establish a connection amid a perceived endless tunnel of self indulgence through compassion’s unsullied light.
Compassion can show its true form of sincerity when we stop being so fixated with our personal endeavors. Instead broaden our internal emotions to an explosive [volatile] and expandable peripheral outreach.
Showing compassion does not show our weakness, on the other hand, not showing compassion can show just how weak we are.
Pastor G, in spite of possible death, showed compassion, by putting himself daily in harm’s way.
We deviate from our innocence of unconditional love, allowing life’s occurrences to daunt our purpose in life.

What is G’s argument abort [success]?

Success more about breaking down wall, & the people change their ideas about themselves success is about the process         Dentist_____

It depends on the person, if (s)he accepts or not if they do, it is success ; my job is to put it out there. Plant the seed. Not sowing people.

Income vs wealth- income is how much you make; wealth is what’s your worth [wealth is created]
The more individualistic you are the more “toilet paper you’re going to buy” [American’s will stay poor because they don’t know how to combine their money to make wealth]

Wealth inequality in America – youtube video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPKKQnijnsM
How do you affect the distribution of wealth to actually happen?

Pension- is public/ private

Taking out from payroll check, while business adds to what you put in.

Do you get taxed on 401k after start collecting?

How to we move towards something more equitable? [it’s a mass question how we can restructure society]

Politicians never talk about the poor during their campaigns

If you have a felony you don’t vote

DEEP MOMENTS

Mr. P’s talk

The winter ball dance

His emotions after beating Rowdy

His grandma’s death & funeral

When his poor-ness is found out

When Rowdy blames him for his sister’s death

1st day at Reardom

“Turtle Lake”

When he & rowdy climb the tree

The last one-on-one w/rowdy & whole thing about leaving res

Cumulative effects of death, grandma, Eugene, sister, “alchoholism”

Grandmother get’s run over by a drunk driver, what was her last words,….

What do you think about that, about someone running over your grandma  by a drunk driver….?

The hatred, anger, revenge, needs to be released from the stress,  “hope she breaks her leg”

Able to leave a legacy of forgiveness, peace, and tolerance

Grandma focused on Arnold, her last way to encourage him

Trying to break a cycle of the

   Never too late for hope

What is the nature of true forgiving?

A sincere feeling of letting go of the hurt pain sadness, anger, that someone causes you in your life.

It’s a gift

Have you even been forgiven?

How can hold accountable and still be forgiving…..

It can help people, to hopefully learn from their wrong doings, in effect to help them change for more positive

With a lot of kids today, some I believe need to have a sense of “a village raising a child” where neighbors and community comes together to “check” those who does wrong while they’re young. With the hope they will learn to grow up learning more respect for themselves, community, people, and life.

How does Arnold experience the three deaths.

Wake- laughter, he is given some space, come together as community, Rowdy is distance (I’m still mad, so I am going to be distant when your grandma is killed by a drunk

*still mad*- consequences of anger are; that you don’t show up like you need

--he blames himself for the death & mad at God for allowing this to happen

The novel “The sunflower”

You may not be comfortable with…..

After everything Arnold experiences how does Arnold not sink?

If you can’t articulate what is inside of you, you will be submerged by it. “Baldwin”

-
3.       His thought process around going to Reardon
-          Hope
-          A beginning of a hope
-          Starting hope going beyond society norms
-          Does want to be kills pro and cons
-          Belongs now to more than one tribe
-          Inspired through Mr. P’s talk

Mr P talk causes Jr to pursue Reardon, while his sister fallows after.

How to expound-

Going deeper:

  • Get context
  • Analyzing
  • Pages 38-40
  • Imagining a playing w/it:
  • Making fun of the stereotypes
  • Always optimistic ---motivated
  • Always motivated by something better
  • Jr has hope for all the other spokanes
  • In the midst of family depression he has hope for
  • Surprised by her passion
  • Sis is hilarious & still human

“The irony of Mr. P advice”

-----------------
Indigenous people of Philippines- 1 is Aetas

Native Americans should politically be called indigenous not native American or Indians-

Native Americans got to the US because before the land was connected …. Russia and Alaska were connected by ice.

Why did 200 Native American who migrated to the US become so many tribes?

  • ·         For prosperity reasons--- not enough natural supplies to live off the land to support the population
  • ·         Different leaders formed, breaking into different tribes
  •  ·         There were multiple migrations

How did agriculture change the world?

·         Allowed the native Americans to stay in one place longer

·         Domestic Agriculture started in Iraq*****

*******Read the book --- “Born to Run"******

It’s in our DNA we’re born to run

15 years ago,  in Northern Canada,  no t.v. or electricity and used generators. They obtained 1 t.v.

The kids started watching more t.v. therefore, started losing their culture, moving to the big city as they get older, started adapting more Americanized thinking….

What does this mean to me personally?

Facts about Native Americans

  • ·         Some still live in traditional ways
  • ·         Most don’t like term “Indian”
  • ·         Only indigenous persons are recognized buy US federal government are given sovereignty
  • ·         25% or more Native blood & you qualify for financial aid
  • ·         Either really rich from casinos or dirt poor
  • ·         300 federal reservations in the US
  • ·         562 recognized tribes currently in US
  • ·         21 recognized tribes currently in California
  • ·         Constant struggle w/industry & capitalist interested in taking their land
  • ·         A lot of struggle to maintain culture
  • ·         70% of native Americans live off reservation
  • ·         Largest reservation is Navajo
  • ·         Conflict between US desire to govern vs. sovereignty
  • ·         Most natives are not living from their original place of ancestry

Aaron Huey: America's native prisoners of war

Leonard Peltier

How many treaties were made and broken between Native Americans?

There are young people all over the world, who identifies with hip hop culture.

1851 1st treaty of Lakotah & Sieu

From 8mil to 250K Native American within 400 years

Sieu nations vs. U.S. court settlement

Legacy (consequences) of the history

Unemployment is between 85%-90%

School dropout rates 70%

With so many things on your mind how do you put on paper clean and clear thoughts….

Practice… “give your mind a chance to right”

Writing sentences

  • Start collecting idea electronically

  • Start gentrification on a new doc

  • One way to write is to create a repository (a place where things can be stored)

  • Put your idea at the bottom of your document. As you write your paragraphs, pull from your repository.

  • Always stay in charge of you essay

  • Each paragraph should have a point (topic sentence should state your point)

*******If you are linked to me I actually sent notes through google docs with diagrams...
blogger can not display them  properly******

Intro does not need a topic sentence
Intro consist of:

Announce theme
Anecdote, background
Open up the idea w/ questions philosophizing

Funnel intro:

leading to thesis (thesis  = 1 sentence)

i.e. raising minimum wage

  • 1.       wages from 7.50-10.10

  • 2.       Boehner said “get exact quite” that it won’t help anybody

  • 3.       Liar, how?

  • 4.       Will actually help folks at minimum wage

  • 5.       Will help out new vs. old

  • 6.       Boehner’s claim that this wil help out zero is truthful but false, he is technically not at fault, but he is manipulating the truth to make Obama appear to offer us an empty promise.

  • 7.       Boehner’s sleight of hand, manipulation, distortion, misleading, deception, game

Thesis: Boehner’s sleight of hand assumes that the public will not analyze the truth of what he is saying, causing us to fixate on the negative, the zero, of what Obama claimed in his State of the Union.

Need to expound on the phrases.

Phrases-

  • will not analyze the truth

  • causing us to fixate on the negative

  • the zero

  • sleight of hand

juice the zero:

the decision to use this word versus not many or only a few stirs up the controversy around Obama
trying to get folks to not recognize that if there are no future contracts then he is correct but if there are contracts signed going forward then Obama is telling the truth

Boehner is extorting us mentally

Does Obama have the power to change the minimum wage on federal contracts?   Yes (by executive order (authority))

“zero” is a claim Obama himself made in the speech

evidence: Obama care is talked about in a similar way(find an example of this being done with Obama care and analyze to help your case with the zero

Trying to rush us and he expects that we won’t analyze what he is saying and what he thinks we will fixate on the negative about Obama

Opposes Obama

Before we can think, tries to implant negative thought thoughts against Obama

Bipartisan , increase exports, make US more competitive globally, “insure transparency and public engagement in trade” (make an idea from these four ideas)

In order to make the US more competitive globally, through bipartisan, they need to insure transparency and public engagement in trade;” by increasing exports.

"Politically I am a Democrat. I learned about politics mainly through life experiences and current events through news media. I am a Democrat because for the most part they seem to focus more for the lower to middle class people while Republicans focus overall for the rich to get richer and cut abilities for those in need. A large hit for example is to the education system. Tremendous cuts have been made at all levels in the education system from pre-K through college, while the cost to receive these benefits are increasing every year. Democrats focus on equality for all people. In addition they  push for benefits for the middle and lower class groups."
